The last weekend new captures of lesser kestrels took place as part of Action A2 of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN urban. In 2018 50 individuals were fitted with transmitters but given the useful life of the appliances most of them either no longer give off signals or do so inadequately. As the date of the end of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN project has been extended it was necessary to fit birds with GPS datalogger transmitters to continue the follow-up of the collaborating estates (Actions B1 and C4).

The Sustainability Department has financed the purchase of 30 transmitters at no cost to the LIFE project so work can be continued in the three ZEPAs selected in 2018: Trujillo, Acedera, and Casa de la Enjarada. This last weekend Naturalis, the partner responsible for this work, carried out the captures in the Trujillo and Casa de la Enjarada ZEPAs where 13 and 12 birds were fitted with transmitters respectively. Over the next few days individuals will be captured in the Acedera ZEPA.

Thanks to this initiative we will obtain information on the use of the feeding areas and the movement of the birds. Their tracing will allow the follow-up of the collaborating estates concerning which collaboration agreements have been entered into with farmers and stockbreeders. On these estates a pilot management project has been implemented to benefit the lesser kestrel, improving the pastures, increasing the surface area of fallow pasturelands, introducing the cultivation of leguminous plants, and reducing the livestock density. Thanks to the transmitters we will able to assess the kestrels' acceptance of these measures and in the last analysis define management guidelines.
