Under the URBAN BIRDING Project, five urban SPAs have been selected in towns of special touristic interest – both because of their resources and establishments and because of the demand they generate at a national and international level. These SPAs are in the municipalities of Cáceres, Plasencia, and Trujillo (in the province of Cáceres) and Jerez de los Caballeros and Zafra (in the province of Badajoz).
In each of these municipalities, a tourist route has been marked out that incorporates the lesser kestrel alongside tourist visits to monuments to act as a guide for those interested, likewise allowing visitors to enjoy seeing the kestrels in this special historical setting full of monuments.
The routes have been designed in such a way that they allow visitors to enjoy the main heritage aspects of each of the five urban SPAs, as well as the best places to observe the lesser kestrel and its breeding colonies. Therefore, itineraries have been established –sometimes circular– whose duration ranges between one and two hours.
For each route, a map has been drawn up to guide the user through their tourist visit. On said map they will find, in addition to the marked route, the main historical monuments where the lesser kestrel colonies are located, as well as technical and descriptive data about the species and information related to the specialized tourist offerings.
