Since last September and within the context of the Life ZEPAURBAN Project, work has been being carried out to improve the feeding habitats of the lesser kestrel at the designated estates of the SPAs of Trujillo, Cáceres, and Acedera. Specifically, the spreading of fertilizer (superphosphate) has begun in grassy areas, with the aim of improving the grass quality, which in turn will increase the abundance of prey for the kestrel in the spring. Over the next few weeks, other actions will continue such as the planting of legumes and grains, land rotation and reservation of unused land, construction of enclosures to limit grazing, etc. All this is designed to achieve a mosaic of crops that improves the characteristics of the feeding habitat for the next breeding period. The results of this pilot project will be used to set the guidelines for the improved management of pseudo-steppe environments for the benefit of this and other species whose populations are in a worrying decline in numbers.
